Transportation affects ecosystems in a multitude of ways. The environmental effects of automobile use are vehicle emissions that contribute to air pollution as well as environmental impacts from producing the fuels they run on. In addition, the intense amount of infrastructure required to support vehicular travel; including roadways, parking, and service stations, increase the consumption of land and non-renewable resources and absorb heat energy which intensifies the heat island effect. Encouraging the use of mass transit, fuel efficient vehicles, bicycling, and the act of carpooling assists in reducing the negative effects that vehicular traffic create.

In addition to the affects of transportation, there is also the affect we have on the ecosystem ourselves. The amount of trash that is generated on a daily basis and transported to landfills is regrettable. There is opportunity to encourage and participate in recycling programs, diverting the amount of waste deposited into landfills. Land, water, and air pollution impacts can all be reduced by minimizing the volume of waste sent to landfills. Recycling of paper, metals, cardboard, and plastics reduces the need to extract natural resources.

Purcell Green will assist in developing a sustainable approach through review and implementation of the following programs:

SUSTAINABLE SITES:
• Provide recycling collection areas
• Provide sustainable landscaping
• Install bicycle racks
• Provide preferred parking for car pooling and fuel efficient vehicles
• Install permeable pavement parking lots
• Provide power plug-ins / Vehicle charging stations
• Organize a bus route or investigate adding a bus stop along an
   existing route
